Brazil: Update: Strike by metro, train workers gets underway in Sao Paulo

Brazil: Update: Strike by metro, train workers gets underway in Sao Paulo | Travel Advisory | Scoop.it
In a unified stand against privatization policies, employees of São Paulo’s Metropolitan Train Company (CPTM), Metropolitan Company (Metrô) and the Basic Sanitation Company of the State of São Paulo (Sabesp) are set to go on a joint strike on Tuesday. This move is in protest against the government’s plans to privatize metro rail lines and the state’s sanitation company, a decision that workers fear could lead to a decline in service quality and increased societal burden.

The strike is expected to affect metro lines 1, 2, 3, and 15, and all CPTM lines managed by the public sector. Private sector operated metro lines 4 and 5 and CPTM lines 8 and 9 will not be affected. Sabesp workers have stated that there will be no interruption in water supply during the strike.

In past instances, São Paulo has witnessed significant disruption due to strikes. For instance, transport strikes led to almost 150 kilometers of congestion being recorded in the early hours of the morning, 50 percent higher than a week prior. A court order for at least 80 percent of the fleet to be in circulation at peak hours was not complied with, affecting more than 700 lines and 6,500 buses which would normally transport 1.5 million passengers.

Nigeria: Update: Labour unions suspend strike for 30 days

Nigeria: Update: Labour unions suspend strike for 30 days | Travel Advisory | Scoop.it
After about five hours of negotiations between organised labour and the federal government team on the proposed indefinite strike slated to commence October 3, labour has suspended the strike for 30 days.

Before the agreement was reached, the organised labour had threatened to pull out of the meeting following the government insistence that the N35, 000 Provisional salary increment would only last for six months.

The labour had accused the government team of reneging on what was agreed on Sunday night to the effect that the N35, 000 Provisional salary increment which is across board, would be paid until new minimum wage would be negotiated and implemented from next year.

But reading the Memorandum of Understanding, MoU, at the end of the meeting which ended about 11pm, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, said the Organised labour has suspended the planned indefinite strike for 30 days.

The MoU also mandated the Minister of Labour to look into the withheld salaries of university staff.

Sri Lanka: SriLankan Airlines flights disrupted because of technical issues

Sri Lanka: SriLankan Airlines flights disrupted because of technical issues | Travel Advisory | Scoop.it
Sri Lanka's national carrier, SriLankan Airlines on Friday (29) issued a statement in response to flight delays and cancellations experienced over the past few days.

"Over the last few days, we at SriLankan Airlines have needed to cancel several flights mainly due to a number of technical issues which required temporary grounding of aircraft," said SriLankan Airlines in a statement.

It added that these are routine issues, and aircraft maintenance follows very strict procedures which necessitate repairs or replacement parts before the aircraft are cleared to fly.

"Unfortunately, in this case we suffered a number of groundings at the same time. Every effort has been made to accommodate passengers on alternative flights on SriLankan Airlines and other carriers, and we have accommodated passengers in hotels where necessary.," said the national airlines.

"We also fully understand that this has affected the travel and plans of many of our guests. We apologize for the disruption and inconvenience caused and assure all our loyal customers that we are working diligently to minimize such occurrences moving forward," it added.

Australia: Some flights delayed at Brisbane Airport amid inclement weather

Australia: Some flights delayed at Brisbane Airport amid inclement weather | Travel Advisory | Scoop.it

Communities across Queensland's south-east and northern New South Wales have faced more wild weather, as powerful storms left homes without power and flights on the tarmac.

Lismore in the NSW Northern Rivers region recorded 76mm of rain in one hour and there were concerns parts of Queensland would see a similar level of rainfall, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

"With storms that move slowly, the rainfall can accumulate and it is heavy rainfall that can lead to flash flooding," senior meteorologist Laura Boekel said.

Some flights were delayed at Brisbane Airport due to safety concerns with lightning strikes in the area and 9News understands 35 flights were impacted in a one-hour period today.

"Storms are currently active around Brisbane Airport," Brisbane Airport's website said.

"Operations are being impacted and some flight delays are expected.

"Please check your flight status with your airline."

Energex workers were kept busy in Queensland after about 11,000 homes were left without electricity due to the wild weather. The power had been restored later tonight.

U.S: Partial government shutdown could disrupt air travel from 30 September

U.S: Partial government shutdown could disrupt air travel from 30 September | Travel Advisory | Scoop.it
(Reuters) - U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg warned on Wednesday that a partial government shutdown could disrupt air travel and said the government would need to furlough 1,000 air traffic controllers in training.

If Congress does not fund government operations before Saturday, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) estimates it would have to furlough more than 17,000 employees and halt the training.

"Especially when it comes to transportation, the consequences would be disruptive and dangerous," Buttigieg said at a press conference.

Past federal government shutdowns caused "significant delays and longer wait times for travelers", the White House said.

The U.S. Travel Association said a partial shutdown would cost the U.S. travel economy as much as $140 million a day.

During a government shutdown, the U.S. air travel system would be "hampered by more flight delays, longer screening lines and setbacks in air travel modernization," the group said.

Air traffic controllers and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) security officers are among the government workers who would be required to keep working but would not be paid.

Earlier this month, the FAA said it would again extend cuts to minimum flight requirements at congested New York City-area airports through October 2024, citing staffing shortages. Under minimum flight requirements, airlines can lose their takeoff and landing slots at congested airports if they do not use them at least 80% of the time.

The FAA in August said it met its yearly goal of hiring 1,500 controllers but is still about 3,000 controllers behind staffing targets. About a quarter of controllers are not yet fully certified.

A government watchdog report said in June that air traffic operations were at risk. In several places, controllers were working mandatory overtime and six-day work weeks to cover shortages.

If Congress does not separately reauthorize the operations of the FAA, it would prevent the government from collecting airline ticket taxes.

In 2019 during a 35-day shutdown, the number of absences by controllers and TSA officers rose, extending checkpoint wait times at some airports. The FAA was forced to slow air traffic putting pressure on lawmakers to end the standoff.
