Pakistan: Update: Some Pakistan International Airlines flights continue to be canceled on 18 October amid fuel issues

Pakistan: Update: Some Pakistan International Airlines flights continue to be canceled on 18 October amid fuel issues | Travel Advisory | Scoop.it
Pakistan's embattled national airline carrier this week cancelled dozens of domestic and international flights because it could not afford to pay its fuel bills, officials said Wednesday.

State-run Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), long accused of being bloated and poorly run, has found funds drying up as the government struggles with a balance of payments crisis caused by crippling debt repayments.

Athar Awan, a deputy spokesman for PIA, said 48 international and domestic flights were cancelled on Tuesday and Wednesday "due to non-availability of fuel".

"The reason for the disruption in fuel supply is non-payment of dues because PIA is facing a financial crisis and cannot pay the dues to Pakistan State Oil on time," a PIA official speaking on condition of anonymity told AFP.

Decades of mismanagement and instability have hobbled Pakistan's economy, and this year Islamabad was forced into yet another bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to avert default.

The interim government has said it will sell off the airline as part of a wider privatisation plan for state-run companies.

"The process of privatization for the national airline should be made more transparent and expedited to prevent further financial losses to the national exchequer," caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar said in a statement last week.

Belgium: Suspect at large after two fatally shot in Brussels; threat level increased in country; terrorism suspected

Belgium: Suspect at large after two fatally shot in Brussels; threat level increased in country; terrorism suspected | Travel Advisory | Scoop.it

From media reports: The BBC reported two people have been shot dead in the Belgian capital Brussels on Monday evening, police have said.

The gunman fled the scene and is still at large. Prosecutors say they are treating the shooting as terrorism.

Belgium's prime minister later confirmed the victims were Swedish. Brussels has increased its terror threat to the highest level.

A video posted on social media of an Arabic-speaking man claimed he carried out the attack in the name of God.

Federal prosecutors in Belgium have since told the AFP news agency that a terrorism probe has been opened following the shooting on the Boulevard d'Ypres.

Police cordoned off nearby streets including the Boulevard du Neuvieme de Ligne, BBC News later added.

A social media video shared by newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws on Monday, but not verified by BBC News, showed a man wearing a fluorescent jacket get off a scooter armed with what appears to be an assault-style rifle before entering a nearby glass-fronted building.

He appears to then shoot at least one person.

Police and emergency services have cordoned off nearby roads following the shooting which happened at around 19:00 local time (17:00 GMT; 18:00 BST).

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander de Croo posted on X, formerly Twitter, that he had "offered my sincere condolences to the Swedish PM following tonight's harrowing attack on Swedish citizens in Brussels."

"Our thoughts are with the families and friends who lost their loved ones. As close partners the fight against terrorism is a joint one."

Belgium are playing Sweden in a Euro 2024 qualifier on Monday evening although it is unclear whether the victims were in the city for the match.

Travelers are advised to following the advice of officials, monitor local radio and other media, and remain aware of developments.

Israel, Lebanon, Switzerland: Update: Swiss International Air Lines suspends flights between Switzerland and Beirut until 28 October because of border unrest

Israel, Lebanon, Switzerland: Update: Swiss International Air Lines suspends flights between Switzerland and Beirut until 28 October because of border unrest | Travel Advisory | Scoop.it
Swiss International Air Lines said Monday it was suspending flights between Switzerland and Beirut initially until October 28 due to unrest on the border between Lebanon and Israel.

"SWISS places top priority on the safety of its passengers and crew," the flag carrier said in a statement.

"We have decided to suspend our return connections between Switzerland and Beirut, as an extension of the conflict cannot be ruled out at this time."

Four flights would be affected, the airline said.

Repeated fire in recent days has claimed lives on both sides of the UN-patrolled border between Lebanon and Israel, which remain technically at war.

If Israel does invade the Palestinian enclave of Gaza in its war on Hamas, Lebanon’s Iran-backed Hezbollah movement has warned it may escalate its military involvement.

SWISS has canceled its scheduled flights between Zurich and Tel Aviv, and has now suspended its special repatriation flights too, citing the expected Israeli ground offensive.

Around 880 people had returned to Switzerland on four such flights.

Lebanon: Official Travel Advice: U.S. updates its advisory, warns against travel to country because of security issues

Lebanon: Official Travel Advice: U.S. updates its advisory, warns against travel to country because of security issues | Travel Advisory | Scoop.it
Do Not travel to Lebanon due to the unpredictable security situation related to rocket, missile, and artillery exchanges between Israel and Hizballah or other armed militant factions. Reconsider travel to Lebanon due to terrorism, civil unrest, armed conflict, crime, kidnapping, and Embassy Beirut’s limited capacity to provide support to U.S. citizens.

On, October 17, 2023, the Department authorized the voluntary, temporary departure of family members of U.S. government personnel and some non-emergency personnel from U.S. Embassy Beirut due to the unpredictable security situation in Lebanon.

Do Not Travel to:

the border with Syria due to terrorism and armed conflict
the border with Israel due to the potential for armed conflict
refugee settlements due to the potential for armed clashes
Country Summary: Terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in Lebanon. Terrorists may conduct attacks with little or no warning targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping malls, and local government facilities.

The Lebanese government cannot guarantee the protection of U.S. citizens against sudden outbreaks of violence. Family, neighborhood, or sectarian disputes can escalate quickly and can lead to gunfire or other violence with no warning. Armed clashes have occurred along the borders, in Beirut, and in refugee settlements. The Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF) have been brought in to quell the violence in these situations.

Large demonstrations have erupted in the wake of recent violence in Israel and Gaza. U.S. citizens should avoid demonstrations and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings or protests as some of these have turned violent. Protesters have blocked major roads, including thoroughfares between downtown Beirut and the area where the U.S. Embassy is located, and between Beirut and Beirut Rafic Hariri International Airport.

Local security authorities have noted a rise in violent crimes, including political violence. Multiple unsolved killings in Lebanon may have been politically motivated. U.S. citizens living and working anywhere in Lebanon should be aware of the risks of remaining in the country and review their personal security plans.

U.S. citizens who choose to travel to Lebanon should be aware that consular officers from the U.S. Embassy are not always able to travel to assist them. The Department of State considers the threat to U.S. government personnel in Beirut sufficiently serious to require them to live and work under strict security. The internal security policies of the U.S. Embassy may be adjusted at any time and without advance notice.

Kidnapping, whether for ransom, political motives, or family disputes, has occurred in Lebanon. Suspects in kidnappings may have ties to terrorist or criminal organizations.
